IN THE COMMUNITY – Delivering Donated Appliances

Bekins employee delivers donated appliances

DELIVERING DONATED APPLIANCES

For more than 25 years, Bob Beerens has been instrumental in helping our Electronics Integration team earn 18 national and international honors. Bob works as the Project Manager for our Electronics Integration team so he does not work with appliances for Bekins. In his spare time though, Bob volunteers picking up and delivering donated appliances for local people in need.

First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven works with Love In Action for what they call their “Appliance Ministry.” They accept donations of used appliances and give them to people who cannot afford new ones. In 2017 alone, the Appliance Ministry delivered 78 appliances.

Bob donates his time after work once per month for about two to four hours. He has been volunteering with the Appliance Ministry for the last 10 years.

As a Project Manager for our Electronics Integration team, Bob gets the unique opportunity to see the very best homes in West Michigan. As a volunteer for the Appliance Ministry, he also sees homes that don’t even have a door for their bathroom.

“It makes you feel extremely appreciative for what you have,” Bob said. “You would be amazed at how meager the living conditions can be for some people in our community.”

Our installers earn international acclaim for work with local smart home

Our Electronics Integration team has earned international acclaim for integrating a local smart home. CEDIA, the leading global authority in the home technology industry, named Bekins a finalist for Best Integrated Home. CEDIA will announce the winner during their awards show in September.

Classic Stereo uses Bekins for installation and integration. Bekins is the only company in the state of Michigan to be listed as a Home Technology Professional Award finalist this year. This marks the 14th time CEDIA has recognized our Electronics Integration team for their work.

local smart home

Our team designed and installed full-home control for a three-floor house with an attached barn along the dunes of Lake Michigan. Full-home control here meant:

  • whole-home audio
  • robust WiFi and cellular network services
  • automated shades
  • total-coverage RF remote controls in every room
  • automated lighting control
  • televisions
  • touchpads
  • keypads

BENEFITS OF A SMART HOME

When you have three floors and an attached barn, automated lighting control provides tremendous convenience. Turn all of your lights on or off with one touch. You can also set scenes to accommodate your needs.

For a home that has no protection from the sun, automated shades help control the temperature. In addition, they help protect your home’s carpet and furniture from sun damage.

Breaking Ground On Expansion

Growing Buisness - Expansion in Coopersville

OUR GROWING BUSINESS NEEDS MORE SPACE

If you drive by Coopersville along the I-96 expressway, you will see construction vehicles at the Bekins Service Center and Warehouse on O’Malley Drive. Bekins, which also owns Classic Stereo, has broken ground on a new addition which will nearly double the warehouse and office space, creating space for more jobs at our growing business.

The locally-owned, internationally-acclaimed appliance and electronics company in West Michigan has already outgrown the three-year-old building in Coopersville. Classic Stereo receives its products at the Service Center and it also houses our electronics integration staff.

Bekins President, Scott Bekins, opened the Coopersville Service Center and Warehouse in 2015 to accommodate the company’s growth at the time. With state-of-the-art, interactive showrooms in Grand Haven and Grand Rapids, he planned for the warehouse and office space in Coopersville to accommodate at least 10 more years of company growth. However, Bekins has grown faster than even he expected.

Bekins has nearly tripled its staff since 2010. When the additional 30,000 square feet of warehouse and office space is complete, it will give us the space to double our staff.

Growing Business - Expansion In Coopersville

IMPROVING EFFICIENCY – CONTINUING TO RECYCLE

The addition includes changes to make operation even more efficient, which enables us to deliver the best service while keeping costs competitive.

Added space will also help Bekins continue to be one of the greenest appliance dealers in the nation. We recycle more than 90 percent of all waste in their facility, which includes:

  • old appliances
  • cardboard
  • plastic
  • styrofoam
  • banding
  • and much more…

The recycling efforts saved more than 1,286 trees, 7,567 gallons of oil and 280 cubic yards of landfill space in just the last three years.

SERVING MORE CUSTOMERS

The addition will help Bekins serve more of the top-notch products and services that have earned 20 national and international honors during its 43 years of serving West Michigan.

“We always have been and always will be a service company that happens to sell products,” Bekins said. “People can buy what we sell elsewhere, but you can’t get our service anywhere else. That’s why we continue to grow – better service, same price. We can only do that by being smarter and more efficient. The operations center in Coopersville and our amazing people allow us to do just that.”

LIFE UPGRADED: ELECTRONICS AND APPLIANCES HELP THE CAC

Life Upgraded CAC Boardroom in use

At Classic Stereo, we use the internationally-acclaimed Bekins team to install our prodcuts in the home. The Bekins motto is “Life Upgraded.” We understand that you will only care about a product’s features when those features can improve your life.

Bekins volunteers recently installed appliances and electronics in an addition for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Ottawa County. Their Development Director, Rebekah Bakker, tells us how the appliances and electronics help the employees and children at the center.

FEEDING HUNGRY CHILDREN: 1,114 FOOD ITEMS FOR HAND2HAND

Feeding Hungry Children Hand2Hand Collection

Spring Break provides an exciting break from classes for many school children, and maybe even a fun trip away from home. However, many children miss their school-provided breakfast and lunch. These hungry children worry about where they will get their next meal.

Hand2Hand normally provides these children with meals for the weekend. Now, they need enough food to last an entire week away from school.

Classic Stereo and Bekins employees recently collected and donated 1,114 food items for these hungry children to eat during Spring Break.

Feed Hungry Children Grand Rapids
Classic Stereo and Bekins employees in Grand Rapids collected 600 items.
Feed hungry children Coopersville

WHAT IS HAND2HAND?

Hand2Hand is a ministry that works primarily in West Michigan to provide food to school children. Every Friday, a volunteer discreetly places a backpack in a child’s locker full of food for the weekend. The backpacks go to children who are at risk of not getting enough food at home while they are away from school.

This year the working with:

  • 4897 children who need backpacks filled with food
  • 150 schools who place the backpacks in the lockers
  • 90 churches that supply the volunteers and pack the backpacks
  • 3,400 volunteers

A PARENT TOLD HAND2HAND:

“LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK IS DIFFICULT FOR EVERYONE BUT WHEN YOU HAVE CHILDREN AND YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A SNACK IT IS DIFFICULT. HAND2HAND HELPS ME TO GIVE MY CHILDREN WELL ROUNDED MEALS.”

AUDIO EXPERTS: LESSON AT DISCOVERY ELEMENTARY

Audio Experts - Teaching loudspeakers

A handwritten letter can still be a powerful tool. Our audio experts at Classic Stereo recently received a handwritten note from a fifth grade student at Discovery Elementary School in Kentwood.

The students each pick a topic that interests them, then they find an expert in the field to answer questions and be their mentor in the subject.

We were flattered when one of the students asked us to be a mentor.

We sent our newest Electronics Professional, Craig Rybarczyk, to give a presentation to Mrs. Tidd’s entire class.

LETTER FOR THE AUDIO EXPERTS

Craig was impressed with the letter we received.

“I thought that it was absolutely awesome that a Fifth Grade student was so inquisitive as to how speakers work, and that she would seek out the professionals at Classic Stereo to see where loudspeaker technology currently is, and where its heading,” Craig said.

Here are just a few excerpts from the note we received:

Handwritten letter for the audio experts

“As experts in the fields of loudspeakers I am confident that the people of Classic Stereo will be able to assist me in my research and product development. I am responsible for knowing what innovations have had the greatest impacts on loud speakers and what current innovations are currently impacting the topic.”

Handwritten letter for the audio experts

“I am particularly interested in loudspeaker sound, something I’ve read a lot about in my research. I would like to understand the advancements in this area better and highlight them in my work.”

Handwritten letter for the audio experts

“I am very excited to become more of an expert on loudspeakers. I have been reading about the utility daily…”

MEET OUR NEWEST AUDIO EXPERT CRAIG RYBARCZYK

Craig recently met with the student one-on-one during the school day to answer specific questions. Then Craig met with Mrs. Tidd’s entire class to talk more about the science of loudspeakers.

“The class had wonderful questions, and they even knew many of the technical terms I used,” Craig said. “It is exciting to see such young kids be so interested in the technology around speaker design, and the bright future of this industry.”

HELPING THOSE WHO HELP LOCAL CHILDREN

Our internationally-acclaimed Electronics Integration team recently donated their time to assist the Children’s Advocacy Center in Holland. Early in the process, the team helped pre-wire the center’s expansion. In late January, they returned to finish installing the electronics.

Dozens of our employees also returned on the weekend to install appliances, help move boxes, furniture and much more into the new addition.

All of our volunteer efforts allowed the center to not miss any days of helping local children who need their assistance.

MOVING DAY!

WHAT IS THE CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER?

The Children’s Advocacy Center in Holland provides abuse prevention and intervention with a coordinated and multi-disciplinary team approach to Protective Services. This approach prevents children from talking to multiple agencies and giving multiple interviews. Some of their services include:

  • Groups
  • Courtroom Orientation
